Welcome K-12 Educator

According to the National Research Council ( 2011), “What students learn about the science disciplines, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) during their K-12 schooling shapes their intellectual development, opportunities for future study and work, and choices of career, as well as their capacity to make informed decisions about political and civic issues and about their own lives.” The idea of teaching and learning STEM topics in an integrated way is new to the mainstream of educational terms. But for a long time many teachers have used a cross-disciplinary approach in self-contained classrooms to integrate these disciplines. At some point many of you have been STEM teachers without even knowing it!

Many teachers on their own have participated in workshops, conferences and training programs that have helped them learn how to integrate and teach the various STEM disciplines in their classrooms. Through the NASA Educator Professional Development Collaborative which is a part of the TX State LBJ Institute for STEM Research and Education, we aim to point you in the direction of the wealth of resources available to you, the K-12 teacher, to enhance your teaching of STEM subjects as aligned to your State or National Standards, best practices in STEM instruction, and sound culturally responsive teaching approaches.
